Cameron's Riolu has evolved into Lucario, giving the battle a new twist. With just Pikachu and Lucario left to battle, Ash and Cameron pull out all the stops and launch attack after attack to try and defeat the other trainer. Despite Ash and Pikachu's strong will and resolve, ultimately Camereon and Lucario win the battle, advancing them to the Top 4.

However, the real test for Cameron still lies ahead. As the semi-finals begin, Cameron must now battle Virgil to see who will go onto the final round and potential win the Vertess Conference. The third round of the qualifying rounds at the Vertress Conference start off with a battle between Ash and Stephan. The two rivals are ready to face each other again and start the battle off with Krookodile and Liepard.

The two rivals show off their impressive new moves and battle strategies as the battle rages on. After giving it everything they got, the battle ends up with a head to head match of Krookodile vs Sawk. With the chance to make it to the Quarter-finals at stake, neither trainer will give an inch. The first round of the Vertress Conference rages on as Ash and Trip are locked in a fierce battle.

No matter what Ash does Trip seems to have the upper hand and Serperior is able to counter everything he can do. Just when things seem to look bleak, Ash manages to think up some clever ways to use Pikachu's Iron Tail to free himself from Serperior, and then combine it with Electro ball to defeat Serperior. With Trip defeated, Ash manages to advance to the second round along with Bianca, Cameron, Virgil, and Stephan. The second round soon begins with the first match being Cameron vs Bianca. The battle gets off to a great start but only one will win and advance. Ash and friends arrive in Vertress City where the Unova League competition is about to start. They quickly reunite with rivals Bianca, Stephan, Cameron, Virgil, and Trip.

The night before the competition Ash can hardly sleep as he is excited for the tournament. The next day the first round matches are revealed.

After finding out he owns all the evolutions of Eevee, Ash decides to follow him to his family's house to see all of them. While there they learn that a group of wild Cryogonal have frozen up the nearby lake and dam. When Virgil's brother becomes trapped by the Cryogonal, Virgil, Ash, Iris, and Cilan head in to solve the problem. Ash and friends arrive in Opelucid City where Iris is set to battle Drayden.

She quickly becomes overwhelmed with this thought and runs to a nearby tower and climbs all the way to the top, causing panic to the people below. When Iris cools down and comes down to the ground, the group run into a lady named Martha who used to be Iris's dorm adviser when she attended Opelucid Academy. Martha gives everyone a brief tour and lunch at the academy before bringing everyone to meet Drayden. Iris is finally feeling confident enough to take on Drayden. The first round of the match ends up being Haxorus vs. Excadrill, the same battle that Iris and Drayden had many years ago.

Although now Iris is sure the battle will be different, but Drayden still has some tricks up his sleeve.
